Inspiring the younger generation is something that has been a driving force for Shucks since day one. School playgrounds are the building blocks for a child’s play experience, and so providing a colourful interactive space is paramount for creative play. Playground murals are a London tradition and Shucks is proud to have added on to this long established practice.

Shucks One Presents: Foundation Rocks

Shucks One presented a unique visual art exhibition celebrating the themes of consciousness, positive attributes and important figures in classic UK and US hip hop culture, discussing its wider implications on modern culture.

Foundation Rocks is a long running project consisting of interviews with Legendary Hip Hop artists and a large body of artworks that reflects the discourse with them. It has resulted in 3 solo art shows and is an ongoing and evolving project

Foundation Rocks combined a series of portraits, illustrations and sculpture, capturing the original hip hop mantras of “peace, love, and unity; knowledge, wisdom and understanding”, presenting a challenge to the dominating themes of violence, negativity and corporatism which resonate throughout hip hop today. The project was the artists’ search to rediscover these foundation principles by retracing the history of UK hip hop music and the individuals making it. It was an attempt to cement the originators of UK hip hop as icons for British music fans, who are often more familiar with the originators in the US.

The exhibition was a visual interpretation of interviews Shucks One conducted with hip hop pioneers of the 1980s, whose music influenced a whole generation of young men and women in the UK. The works addressed issues of history, identity and religion.

Using a variety of objects as canvasses, such as furniture, clothing, masks and found wood, Shucks One creates a sketchbook, a mix tape way of exhibiting work, going back to the core ethics of street music and art. Using bold colours, pattern reminiscent of tribal fabric prints and ancient symbols Shucks One discusses themes of cultural heritage.

“The term ‘old school’ is often banded around without any real understanding of the underlying themes. With this series of works I intend to explore messages and concepts, not just from hip-hop, but human history as well. It is part history lesson, part hip hop project.”

London has a rich heritage of Cummunity Murals, growing up these visual monuments inspired a whole new generation of London artists. Since 2002 Shucks has designed unique community projects and facilitated workshops with young people of all skill levels, all over the Greater London Area. Shucks believes that Student driven projects are key to a positive and inclusive experience, and that community artwork projects, reflect a healthy society.

As a Freelance journalist, Shucks One has actively tracked down and conducted close to 250 interviews with old school and new school MCs, graffiti writers, B-boys, DJs, filmmakers, photographers, culture creators and authors for many Hip-Hop based magazines and websites. These include Ice-T, Grand Wizard Theodore, Crazy Legs, Kool G Rap, Stash, Rosy One, Tommy "The Hip-hop Clown" (featured in the film 'RIZE'), Cormega, Kool DJ Red Alert, MC Mell-O, Martha Cooper (Hip-Hop Files and many more.

In his role as Old School Editor, Graffiti Editor in ground breaking UK HipHop Culture Magazine Undercover , Staff Writer for Graphotism Graffiti Magazine, he aimed to promote positive artists and build a bridge between New School and Old School culture. Shucks was also a regular contributor to HipHop websites and blogs.

For 7 years Shucks was the host of HipHop knowledge mix Radio Show The Kool Skool on Itch FM, where he promoted conscious angle of the culture mixing Interviews with all generations of the artform encompassing the many influences of HipHop.
